"Help in Suffering "
'Help In suffering'
is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded two decades
ago by animal activist Crystal rogers. The organisation
is now working with an aim to make "The pink City of
India" to be the first rabies free city in India.
"Street dogs are caught, vaccinated,
sterilized and returned to the streets in order to create
a rabies-free environment and an acceptable street dog population
in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO)
guidelines," says Diana Mcphee, an Australian
doctor working with the organization.
"Stray dogs have a right to life and a place on our streets.
They reduce the garbage on the streets. They reduce the rat
and vermin population and serve as guard dogs for the community,"
she adds.
The sterilization campaign is part of the
NGO's animal birth control program. It started in 1994 and
went into the intensive mode this year. Today, Jaipur's sterilized
street dogs can be easily identified by their colored collars.
These dogs also have a number tattooed inside their ear.
The NGO also operates an animal shelter
in the city. It runs a daily clinic, where animals are treated
for a small fee. It has an efficient team of veterinarians,
including surgeons and is also equipped with an operation
theatre. It also operates a 24-hour service to rescue injured
animals. It conducts camps in rural areas to educate villagers
on caring for their cattle and other farm animals.
