Dances of Rajasthan.
Ghoomar Dance:
This
is a community dance for women and performed on auspicious
occasions. This is basically derived from the word 'ghoomna',
this is a very simple dance where the dancers are all women,
who move in clockwise and anti-clockwise movements. This dance
has a mandala (circular formation), It is danced to
the accompaniment of kettledrums and the thali (plate).
The genesis of this dance dates back to the ancient time when
ladies of the royal families used to perform it within their
inner courtyards on any festive occasions.
Gair Ghoomar:
This
is one of the many dance-forms of the Bhil tribals, performed
during Holi festival. Both men and women dance together,
dressed in traditional costume, long flowing robes with a
colorful waistband. The dance begins with the formation of
two circles with alternate members facing outwards. Based
on the dancers proficiency, the dance can build up to a series
of intricate patterns. The music is of the surnai and
nagada, which builds up as the tempo of the dance gets
high.
