A Fantastic Fusion
The
futuristic Fusion is the latest offering from Bajaj Auto. Fusion
aims to bring together mainstream scooter and futuristic styling.
The front end of the scooter draws inspiration from European
scooters, with the large clear glass headlamp mounted on the
front body work instead of on the handlebar fairing as is the
usual practice. Indicators and park lights are integrated into
a single unit that runs along the length of the front body work,
tapering towards the nose.
Instrument pods of all Bajaj bikes have never lacked style
and the Fusion is no exception. A speed cum fuel gauge is
employed while the telltale lights are neatly positioned on
the left of the panel. A fancy looking switchgear has also
been employed but is diffucult to access. The rear end has
been stylised and the integrated tail lamp cum indicators
look suspiciously similar to Devil's horns. How the superstitious
Indian market will respond to this is difficult to say.
The side panels have also been redesigned to look more contemporary
and the clean, unclutttered lines indeed look smart. Powering
the Fusion is a 4-stroke single cylinder air-cooled powerplant
derived from the unit used in Legend. Maximum power is rated
at 9bhp while maximum torque is 11.3Nm. A four-speed gearbox
operated by a twist grip assembly transfers power to the rear
wheel. Being a four-stroke, expect fuel consumption figures
to be in the region of 60-65 kmpl. Maximum speed will be around
70 kmph.
The scooter uses a monocoque chassis and riding position
is comfortable. Front suspension uses a coil spring and shock
absorber with the now standard anti-drive link. The Fusion,
when launched in March-April, is expected to replace the Legend
in the showrooms. Positioned as a traditional scooter with
futuristic styling, Bajaj Auto hopes to infuse some much needed
excitement into the scooter segment. If any scooter can wangle
this, it has to be the Fusion.
